Spotlight on Leadership: Steve Scherer, Chairman of the Board, Skaggs Foundation

Since 2001, Steve Scherer has called the Branson area home. Originally from
Minnesota, Steve relocated to the Ozarks to run a group of hotels in partnership with a
close friend. What started as a business venture quickly turned into a deeper
connection with the community and a love for the area’s natural beauty and four-season
climate.

When he’s not serving in leadership roles or lending a hand in the community, Steve
enjoys spending his free time playing tennis, golfing, hiking, and traveling. His passion
for the outdoors and active lifestyle mirrors his commitment to staying engaged and
energized—qualities that have served him well as chairman of the board for Skaggs
Foundation.

Steve was drawn to the Foundation by a desire to give back. “I like being involved with
the community and having the opportunity to make a difference,” he shared. That spirit
of service is evident in his dedication, particularly through his work on the Foundation’s
grants committee.

One of the accomplishments Steve is most proud of during his tenure is the sheer
impact the Foundation has made across the region. “The number of grants and the
amount of funding poured back into the community is incredible,” he said. He’s
especially impressed by the progress made in addressing mental health needs and
awarding scholarships to nursing students—an area where he’s seen meaningful strides
thanks to Foundation-supported programs.

Serving as board chair has also been an eye-opening experience. “The scope of
accomplishments and the reach of Skaggs Foundation is bigger than I ever expected,”
Steve said. “Seeing the needs in the community and how the Foundation rises to meet
them has been inspiring.” Through his role on the grants committee, Steve has had the
unique opportunity to see firsthand how funding decisions are made and the real lives
being changed as a result.

As for the legacy he hopes to leave? Steve humbly shares that he simply wants to make
a positive contribution and lasting impact.

For those considering board service, Steve offers this advice: “When you join a board,
you’re making a commitment of your time. Be present. Be engaged. Don’t come to the
table distracted—your input matters.”

Under Steve’s thoughtful leadership, Skaggs Foundation continues to grow in its
mission, helping to build a healthier, stronger community for all.
